Undergraduate Work

Illustration 1
The three pieces below were done for the same prompt. We had to read an article, about people who moved constantly for work and had no fixed home, and then make an illustration for it. The left top picture was my final submission. The right is my first thought about how all of those people live in an in-between kind of space. It didn't quite capture the full voice of the article.
Lastly, Callister makes an appearance. This is an outgrowth of the black/white paradigm of the second work. At this point, I've lost the article entirely. I mostly just wanted to use Callister again.

Portrait of a Worker
This assignment is exactly what it sounds like. The worker needed to have a uniform (lab coats count), and I was to make a portrait of them and their workspace. I chose Dr. Nathalia Holtzman, and she works primarily with zebrafish to uncover the mechanisms of cardiogenesis. The right picture is of the two of us walking through the lab, with cameos of other lab members. Since then, I have gotten to know everyone much better because I work in her lab trying to discover the mechanism behind polychlorinated biphenyl number 104-induced malformations of the pancreas.

In the Darkened Hours
For this project, we were given a choice of two poems to illustrate. I chose "In the Darkened Hours," by Bruce Boston. (Page 72 if you're interested.) Without knowing the text, the images are all really surreal- even with the text the images are pretty surreal.

Arthur's Hall
For this piece, we were supposed to draw the room of someone and have the other students guess who lived there. I think I made it too obvious with 'Excalibur,' but the rest came out all right. I think 'Arthur' in old English means 'Bear' (thus the pelt); and there are references to a historical King Arthur in the Mabinogion, though that's one of the later stories, and doesn't mention Excalibur at all. The sword itself is an invention of Geoffrey of Monmouth from his Historia Regum Britanniae, which is half fantasy as it is.

Gremlins
I was never completely satisfied with how this came out, thus the three versions. It's supposed to show an intrusion of the natural world into the one that humans have created. This is where the gremlins come in. There, but not seen, stalking the dimwitted humans... Is he benign or malevolent? None can say.

The Guillotining of Michael X. Rose

That is my dad. We were tasked with drawing one of our parent's experiences after interviewing them and this is what happened. I don't think I really took the assignment seriously. The left is watercolor and ink, the right ink and marker, with some acrylic.

Project 1: Taking an idiom and illustrating it. These are rather straight forward.

Project 2: Illustrating Power
These pieces were supposed to represent times we 'lost' power and 'gained' power. I may have taken one a little too literally.

And built a story around them. Sasha is a rather pampered bird who's never left her cage, much less the house. Charlie is a sparrow who's only lived outside. I guess it's sort of like the Aristocats? I sketched the pages and the last part of the project was to make a finished spread.
